Not so long ago, a few good folk from Meeniyan Town sat in the Meeniyan Store and talked about the great garlic grown in our region - across the Tarwin Valley. They talked about the outstanding dairy, beef, honey, olives, truffles, pork and the artisan foods produced in the region. The seed was sown. And on February 18th in 2017 we celebrated Victoria's first Garlic Festival.
Nearly 8,000 people came to our town and tasted the magical flavours of food inspired by fresh Australian garlic.
They learned about the 300 varieties, what to plant, where and when to plant and learn from the experts at the Garlic Institute.
Visitors strolled through the Garlic Market and sampled a wide range of fine foods and produce – all with a touch of garlic.
Garlic of all sorts was on sale from over 20 specialist growers. The Meeniyan Store had a special blend of Prom Coast Garlic Icecream, and the Cricket Club had limited quantities of LOCH Brewery Garlic Ale.
Garlic Games for All
We offered fun for young and old and a day of entertainment in Meeniyan Town. Story telling was under the trees, the veggie sculptures captivated young and old, the billy cart time trial was busy all day and the sack race was a hit with hundreds of festive folks.
